FIBER IN THE DIET
Fiber is the indigestible part of plant cells that is called roughage. Fiber is found most frequently in whole grain cereals, breads, fruits, and vegetables. Fiber is what provides bulk to the diet, not nutrients.
There are two different kinds of fiber, soluble and insoluble.
Incidentally, there is no fiber in animal products.
You need both soluble and insoluble fiber in your diet, soluble (found in dried beans, vegetables, oat bran and fruit) helps lower blood cholesterol and improve blood glucose levels.
Insoluble fiber, found in wheat bran, whole grain cereals and breads, fruits, dried beans and vegetables. This type of fiber helps prevent constipation and other bowel problems and may reduce the risks of certain types of cancer.
