tips for the household
- Immediately clean up any spills
- Check pilot lights on a regular basis
- If you are lighting a gas burner
light the match before you turn the gas on. At the least this may save
you some singed arm hairs.
- DO NOT
try to extinguish a grease fire by pouring water on it. Instead cover
the fire with a cooking pan lid or use the right type fire extinguisher.
- Always dry your hands before using a
electrical appliance.
- Have a sturdy balanced step stool for
climbing. Don't use a folding chair! [my cousin's
brother-in-law found out about the dangers of that when he climbed into a
chair to hang up a curtain rod for his wife and the chair collapsed, tossing
him through the window on the second story! He was very lucky and just
missed the edge of the pool. 6 inches less and he would have cracked
his head on the cement. Fortunately there was someone around to pull him out
of the deep end of the pool. He also found out that body Amour makes
it quite hard to swim. (he was a cop)
- Keep curtains secure so they do not
blow over the stove.
- Keep handles of pots and skillets
turned inwards so they will not be knocked or pulled off the stove by adults
or young children.
- Always place sharp instruments point
downward when loading into a dishwasher
- Lifting lids by the far side first
can prevent steam burns.
- Make sure all cleaning
materials are stored away from foods.
- Electrical cords and appliances
should be kept away from sinks and stoves.
- Store sharp knives and cutting
instruments away from other cutlery.
- Do NOT use paper towels, dish towels
or napkins to pick up hot containers.
- Do not use electrical appliances near
the water. No matter how careful you are, a plug in radio in the bathtub
with you IS NOT going to be a pleasant experience for you.
- If you are standing in water or if
you have wet hands grabbing a appliance or light fixture is just asking for
trouble.
- To prevent burns and scalds check the
water temperature before you step into the bathtub or shower. Do this just
before you enter the water.
- If there are handicapped people in
the house you should have support bars installed by toilets, showers and
bathtubs.
- Place non skid mats in the shower
. If you use rugs make sure they are rubber backed.
- Dispose of razor blades in a closed
container
- Glass bottles should not be stored by
bathtub or shower.
