Emergency Planning
We should be prepared for many types of emergency depending on where you live. It would be a bit silly for people living say, Tulsa, Oklahoma , Topeka, Kansas or Omaha Nebraska to plan emergency procedures in case of a hurricane but we all should have plans depending on what the local conditions are. Bio-terrorism, nuclear detonation and Terrorist attacks should now be factored into your planning
In the instance of any emergency you should be prepared to vacate your home on moment's notice. Be ready to get out fast!
First thing you should do is draw a floor plan of your residence showing the locations of doors, windows, stairways, large furniture and emergency supplies such as fire extinguishers, any disaster supplies, collapsible ladders, smoke detectors, utility shut off points and first aid kits.
You should mark at least 2 escape routes from each room if possible and mark a place outside the home where the household members should meet in case of a disaster.
If someone in your house hold uses a wheel chair make sure to make at least one exit to your home wheel chair accessible in case the primary exit is blocked.
Be sure to include important points outside such as garages, patios, stairways, elevators, driveways, and porches, Be sure to include any permanent obstructions such as statues, mini ponds, BBQ areas, trees and any other obstruction. If your home is 2 story use an additional sheet of paper.
Be sure to practice emergency evacuation at least three times a year.
You may want to make multiple copies of the example below and store them in different places not only in the house but in your car, and garage if you have one. Make sure they are safe but accessible to the family.

Note: If your secondary location is a friends home you may want to leave a copy of this emergency plan with them.
I would suggest, just in case of the worst case scenario, that you have at least one person outside the home with this plan and that you include fingerprints and physical description for every household member for identification purposes.
